Research:

Research activities at ISAE with use of OPNET Modeler as a simulation tool deal with broadband communication satellite systems. Three application scenarios are under investigation at present time :

  • Aeronautical satellite communications. The main objective is to study the convergence of heterogeneous traffic flows on a single satellite link. As the objective is to provide a significantly increased capacity compared to present systems, the transmission is done at Ka-band. Considered traffic sources are ATC (Air Trafic Control), AOC (Airline Operational Communications), mobile telephony (GSM or UMTS) and Internet access. A PhD thesis conducted in collaboration with ENAC will be defended in June 2009 (Na Tao).

  • High rate and high capacity Ka band satellite systems. Projects are on-going on this theme in the framework of SatNex (European excellence network, FP6 program). The focus is there placed on the global system optimization and not only on the user terminal structure. The main challenge is the radio resource management : DAMA (Demand Assignment Multiple Access), RRM (Radio Resource Management).  PhD thesis, funded by a partnership between Midi-Pyrenees region and ONERA/DEMR, will be defended at the beginning of year 2010 (Anbazhagan AROUMONT).

  • Hybrid networks for Internet access in tropical regions. This project named Tabatinga is supported by SatNex in relation with the DVB Brasil project.
